Join a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as a Histotechnologist in the Anatomic Pathology Lab. In this role as a Histotechnologist, you will be processing surgical tissues for review by pathologist of specimens from hospital, outpatient clinics and outside clients. Vacancies in Histology have caused delays in completing pathology reports for surgical cases and required agency staff to be hired to meet the expected turnaround times. The Anatomic Pathology Lab operates within UChicago Medicine's Department of Pathology, we provide reference laboratory testing to various related and unrelated health care entities, managed care organizations and non-affiliated hospitals, outpatient clinics and private physicians' offices. We offer a full range of diagnostic services.

Job Summary


Routinely performs immunohistochemistry (IHC) and in situ hybridization (ISH) stains on paraffin and frozen sections by properly utilizing a variety of methodologies and instrumentation. Adheres to policies and procedures to assure results of the highest level of quality are provided to physicians and their patients. Assists in the development of new staining protocols. Prepares control plugs and slides in accordance with established laboratory protocol.


Essential Job Functions


  • Collects slides prepared in the Surgical Pathology section from Surgical Pathology and takes them to the IHC laboratory in accordance with established routing procedures.

  • Verifies that the identification on the slides is consistent with the identification on the requisition.

  • Follows the established pre-treatment and post-treatment protocols to provide the best stain with the least amount of background.

  • Label slides in accordance with established laboratory practice making sure that slides are labeled accurately.

  • Assists in development and titering of new and updated antibodies to provide optimal staining.

  • Checks the reactivity of new lots of antibodies and probes against old lots. Properly documents this process.

  • Under the guidance of the senior histotechnologist, laboratory manager and pathologist, collects control tissue and prepares control block to be used as positive control. Cuts control tissue onto case slides in accordance with established laboratory practice.

  • Maintains control tissue and control blocks in the proper manner.

  • Reviews all control and case slides prior to submitting to the medical director for review. Routes all slides and requisitions to the medical director for review prior to distribution to the ordering pathologist.

  • Perform and document quality control and preventive maintenance activities on a daily basis.

  • Prepares and maintains adequate stocks of reagents, control materials and other supplies required for the performance of testing and notifies or assists the supervisor with any shortages or problems.

  • Performs procedures designated under CLIA 88 standards as either moderate or high complexity testing and knows all responsibilities as outlined in the laboratory procedure manual necessary to perform these procedures with the highest level of quality.

  • Completes stains within the established turn around time.

  • Accepts problems referred by physicians and coworkers and resolves these problems or assists the supervisor in the resolution of problems. Directs inquiries to the appropriate laboratory staff.

  • Assists in establishing and maintaining continual compliance with policies, procedures, and record keeping necessary to meet the standards of accrediting or regulatory agencies.

  • Provides assistance in monitoring total quality management, including the standards of accuracy, precision and efficiency in the performance of tests or the operation of equipment in the specialty area.

  • Attends training sessions, seminars and workshops appropriate for the acquisition of the necessary skills and information to enhance clinical laboratory science skills and disseminates the information and skills acquired to the staff.

  • Assists in training and ongoing continuing education of laboratory personnel, students, pathology residents, and others.

  • Files laboratory slides, worksheets and records in an accurate, organized, neat, and timely fashion. Accurately enters all pertinent specimen and staining information into the appropriate computer system.

  • Communicates any pertinent information or problems with appropriate laboratory staff and supervisor.

  • Acts in a consistently professional manner while conducting all duties and responsibilities and wears clothing that is appropriate for conducting those duties.

  • Performs other duties assigned.

Required Qualifications:


  • Minimum qualifications must satisfy CLIA 88 requirements.

  • Associates' degree in clinical laboratory science or related field from an accredited college or university preferred. Equivalent experience acceptable.

  • Certification or eligibility to attain, one of the following registries:-- Histologic Technique, American Society of Clinical Pathologists (HT/ASCP)-- Histotechnologist, American Society of Clinical Pathologists (HTL/ASCP)-- Electron Microscopy Technologist, Electron Microscopy Society of America (EMT/EMSA)

  • At least three years experience in an histology laboratory.

  • Knowledge and ability to use laboratory/hospitals information systems.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Demonstrated proficiency with laboratory equipment.

  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with individuals at all levels.

  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment.

  • Ability to keep work areas clean, orderly and safe at all times

Position Details


  • Job Type/FTE: Part-Time (20 hours)

  • Shift: Saturday-Sunday (4:00am-2:30pm) - 10 hour shifts

  • Unit/Department: Anatomic Pathology Lab

Must comply with UCMC's COVID-19 Vaccination requirement as a condition of employment. If you have already received the vaccination, you must provide proof as part of the pre-employment process.
